Debra Lande Named Publisher of Klutz

New York, NY — March 23, 2009 — Ellie Berger, President of the Trade Publishing division of Scholastic, announced today that Debra Lande has been named Publisher of Klutz, the highly innovative creator of "books plus" for children, and a division of Scholastic, the global children's publishing, education and media company. In this position Lande will lead the creative and editorial direction of the Klutz publishing list and manage the strategic development of the Klutz brand, with both the editorial and design departments reporting to Lande. She will assume her new responsibilities March 30, 2009, and will report to Berger while working closely with John Cassidy, Chief Creative Officer for Klutz.

Lande was most recently Director of Product Innovation for Chronicle Books, the publishing industry’s leading innovative ancillary publisher. A founding member of Chronicle Books Gift Division, Lande held various positions in editorial, starting as Gift Editor and ultimately leading the Gift Division as Associate Publisher. During her sixteen-year tenure, she played a significant role in developing the company’s culture of innovation and acquired and developed books and non-book formats within all of Chronicle’s core categories, with particular emphasis on art, design, stationery, calendars, and children's publishing.

"I'm delighted to welcome Debra to the Klutz team where we'll unleash her enormous creativity onto this fun and innovative line of books that kids love," said Ellie Berger. "Building on the past successes of Klutz, Debra will inspire the creative team to new heights—publishing wonderful books that inspire kids to explore their own creativity and imagination."

"I couldn't be more thrilled to be joining the Klutz team," said Debra Lande. "I love the process of discovery and creation. I can't wait to dive in and explore the world of making interactive books and products for kids. I look forward to working with the creative geniuses at Klutz—who love what they do and have a great time doing it—to create the remarkable publishing that is the hallmark of Klutz."
