Scholastic Announces “Guided Reading Fiction Focus: Second Edition”

Dr. Gay Su Pinnell and Dr. Irene Fountas Expand Guided Reading to Include New Fiction Titles for Students in Grades K-6

New York, NY (June 8, 2009) Scholastic Classroom Books, a division of Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company, announces the release of Guided Reading Fiction Focus: Second Edition. Working with Dr. Gay Su Pinnell and Dr. Irene Fountas, Scholastic has developed a new Guided Reading program so that children can engage in meaningful reading experiences to become independent, successful, lifelong readers. 

Guided Reading Fiction Focus: Second Edition is designed to improve comprehension and inspire a love of reading in students in grades K-6. It is the newest addition to the existing Guided Reading collections which include: Guided Reading Nonfiction Focus, Guided Reading Content Areas, and Guided Reading en español.

  • The new Fiction Focus edition expands the previous editions of Guided Reading to include:
  • 26 levels of books and student materials for grades K-6;
  • 60 trade books per level that feature rich, authentic text and multiple genres—including graphic novels;
  • An expanded 160-page Teacher’s Guide written by Fountas and Pinnell; 
  • Enhanced teaching materials that address Response to Intervention (RTI), genre descriptions and literature discussion groups, plus running records for every level;
  • Classroom techniques and activities that help expand essential vocabulary and build background knowledge.

Dr. Gay Su Pinnell, professor in the School of Teaching and Learning at Ohio State University, is one of America’s leading authorities on Guided Reading.  She created Scholastic’s Guided Reading Fiction and Nonfiction programs, and co-authored the Guided Reading Content AreasProgram. Dr. Irene Fountas, a professor at Leslie University, is an expert on Guided Reading with years of classroom experience in both the US and abroad.  She co-authored the Scholastic Guided Reading Fiction and Content Areas Programs.
