Scholastic Names Dr. Clayton Wilcox Vice President, Education and Corporate Relations

New York, NY — April 17, 2008 — Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company, today announced that Dr. Clayton Wilcox, Superintendent of Schools in Pinellas County, Florida since 2004, will join the company as Vice President, Education and Corporate Relations. Dr. Wilcox is a respected educator with almost 30 years experience in the classroom, as a principal and as leader of large public school districts. In his new role, he will be responsible for building relationships with district administrators, state departments of education and non-governmental organizations, which will help to further strengthen Scholastic’s understanding of important education issues and help guide the company in finding ways to better partner with stakeholders to improve learning in schools nationwide. Dr. Wilcox will report to Dr. Ernie Fleishman, Senior Vice President, Education and Corporate Relations.

In making the announcement, Mr. Fleishman said, “Clayton’s mission is perfectly aligned with Scholastic’s – to help all children learn to read and love to learn. With his wide-ranging experience in the education community, as well as his deep commitment to improving literacy, he is the ideal leader to help Scholastic continue its long tradition of developing the best strategies and programs to serve the nation’s administrators, teachers and students.”

Under Superintendent Wilcox’s leadership, the district has improved student achievement across a number of measures: more students are reading at or above grade level than at any time in the county’s history with the accountability system; and more students of color are taking honors and advanced placement courses than ever before in Pinellas County.

Dr. Wilcox said, “I have loved my time working with the students, parents and educators of Pinellas and we have made real progress toward our goals. Now, I am taking another step in my career and toward my dream of helping to improve the literacy of students all across the country. I am honored to have this opportunity to work with all of the staff of Scholastic, and particularly with Dr. Fleishman, himself a former school superintendent, to use all of the tools at our disposal today to help children nationwide become proficient readers and successful students.”

Prior to his appointment in Pinellas, Dr. Wilcox held a number of leadership positions in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System in Baton Rouge, Louisiana from 1999 to 2002, culminating in a year and a half as Superintendent of Schools. He had previously served in St. Johns County School District in St. Johns County, Florida from 1994-1999. Dr. Wilcox spent the first 10 years of his career as a classroom teacher, and then as a principal in Waterloo Community Schools in Iowa before moving to Florida.

Dr. Clayton Wilcox holds a BA and an MA in Education from the University of Northern Iowa. He earned his Ed.D in Educational Leadership from NOVA Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and has pursued continuing studies at University of Michigan Graduate School of Business in Ann Arbor.
