Scholastic Education Expands Senior Leadership Team with Top Talent for Strategic Marketing, Professional Learning, & Publishing

New York, NY – November 16, 2017 – Today, Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company, announced the appointment of three education industry leaders to positions within the Scholastic Education division: Victoria Burwell, Senior Vice President, Strategic Marketing; Dr. Carol Chanter, Senior Vice President, Professional Learning Services; and Janelle Cherrington, Senior Vice President, Publisher. Reporting to Scholastic Education President Greg Worrell, these leaders will work towards advancing the Education division’s strategic growth plan by providing districts with core literacy curriculum for pre–K to grade 6, expanding the division’s services business by focusing on professional development and family engagement, and increasing sales and marketing capacity. They join the leadership team on the heels of a 2017 EdWeek Market Brief survey release in which teachers and district leaders ranked Scholastic highest among four major educational companies, with 85% expressing positive sentiments about Scholastic.

Victoria Burwell, Senior Vice President, Strategic Marketing, Scholastic Education
As Senior Vice President, Strategic Marketing, Victoria Burwell will elevate Scholastic as a partner for educators and community-based organizations seeking to support children’s literacy development. By leveraging customer communications channels and working closely with sales and marketing teams, she will seek to drive demand generation and business growth through strategic marketing campaigns that highlight the wide-ranging products and consulting services available from Scholastic Education.

A native of Seattle, WA, Victoria joins Scholastic with extensive experience as a senior business leader and marketing innovator across multiple industries—from healthcare and technology to telecommunications and banking. Victoria first joined the education market in 2006 as part of the executive leadership team of the ed tech startup, Headsprout. As Headsprout’s Chief Marketing and Business Development Officer, Victoria built the marketing department and spearheaded the launch of Headsprout Reading Comprehension, ultimately contributing the successful growth and sale of the company. Later, as Senior Vice President, Chief Marketing Officer, Victoria played an integral role in the digital transformation and rebranding efforts of McGraw-Hill Education.

Dr. Carol Chanter, Senior Vice President, Professional Learning Services, Scholastic Education
Dr. Carol Chanter has more than 30 years of experience in general and special education, educational leadership and K–12 literacy. Carol previously held a leadership role at Scholastic during which she liaised with educators regarding best practices in program implementation, coaching, literacy, intervention, instructional practices, and school turnaround. She continued to exercise this expertise in her most recent positions at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Achieve3000. In rejoining Scholastic Education, Carol will lead the Company’s professional development consulting services business, supporting best practices in product usage and ongoing research-based professional development. In addition to being an expert speaker at industry conferences, Carol has authored and co-authored several books and articles, and has taught courses at the University of Central Florida focused on contemporary issues in education, among other topics.

Janelle Cherrington, Senior Vice President, Publisher, Scholastic Education
Throughout her more than 20 year tenure with Scholastic Education, Janelle Cherrington has contributed to and successfully published nearly all of the supplemental curriculum product developed by Scholastic Education, including the expansive suite of Guided and Leveled Reading product offerings. She has played an instrumental role in the development of customized curriculum resources for school districts nationwide, fueling accelerated business growth. Janelle cultivated her passion for learning and supporting children through her early publishing experience creating books and resources for readers at Scholastic, Pearson, and The Jim Henson Company. Over the course of her career, Janelle has worked with renowned authors, researchers, and product developers to help make their instructional visions come to life and become actionable in the classroom. In the role of Senior Vice President, Publisher, Janelle will continue to lead Scholastic Education product development for classroom instruction while assuming the new responsibility of managing the division’s centralized publishing plan that includes family and community engagement offerings as well as professional books.
