Matt Brown Named President of Klutz and SVP, Scholastic Inc.
New York, NY (July 15, 2010) — Ellie Berger, President of the Trade Publishing division of Scholastic (NASDAQ: SCHL), announced today that Matt Brown has been named SVP, Scholastic Inc., and President of Klutz, the highly innovative publisher of “books plus” for children, and a division of Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company. In this position Brown will lead the creative direction of the Klutz publishing program and will manage the strategic development of the Klutz brand. Brown, who takes over the reins of the Klutz division from recently retired co-founder John Cassidy, will assume his new responsibilities September 7, 2010, and will report to Berger.
Most recently, Matt Brown was the co-founder and Play Czar of big BOING, LLC, a strategic innovation company committed to promoting happiness and well-being through play and ecological harmony. In addition to launching its own award-winning brands, big BOING has worked with partners including Coca Cola, Playskool, Disney Retail, Kraft, Toys R Us, PBS Kids, Nickelodeon and Learning Curve to develop new and revitalize existing brands.
“Matt's unique talents combine business acumen with an impressive history of kid-centered creativity," said Ellie Berger. “Matt's contagious sense of fun and depth of experience developing and building brands in the children's market make him perfectly suited to lead Klutz into the future.”
“From the early days of learning to juggle or play the harmonica to buying 25 different creativity books for my daughter, Klutz has been a part of my life and a company that I’ve admired for a long time,” said Matt Brown. “I'm super excited to work with the Klutz team and to see where we can grow this amazing, playful brand.”
Matt Brown is a seasoned entrepreneur and “recovering” attorney dedicated to making play central in the lives of kids and families. He has spent most of his career leading cross-functional teams, blending science, academics, technology, strategy, and innovation in order to develop and launch branded platforms that inspire developmentally rich play experiences. Before big BOING, Brown worked at LeapFrog (1999-2001) where he co-founded and led the Internet Division which created and launched networked, personalized learning systems directly to consumers, as well as to schools nationally in conjunction with the Schoolhouse Division. He was also the VP of Business Development, where he spearheaded successful educational initiatives in Japan, S. Korea and the U.S. Prior to that, he co-founded and was president of Primordial, LLC, the creator of Zoob®.
Over his 15 years in the play business, Brown has been named on numerous patents and patent applications for building toys, electronic learning aids, activity and creativity toys, video games, social-networking systems, adaptive learning technologies and consumer packaged goods. Brown has also led a variety of teams in the development, customization and implementation of seven different types of curricula: language arts, cognitive, physical/athletic, motivation/coaching, affective domain, whole child preschool and play.
Brown serves on the board of GoAnimate, a social-networking animation start-up, and is an advisor to ReeLife and Playing For Keeps, non-profits committed to enriching lives of kids and teens through play and creative expression. Prior to embarking on a career in play, strategy and innovation, Matt Brown practiced law and clerked for the Honorable Oliver Seth, Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals.
