Scholastic Entertainment Raises the Curtain on Slate of Upcoming Children’s Series
New York, NY, October 23, 2018 – Scholastic Entertainment, the media division of Scholastic and home to the highly-anticipated Clifford The Big Red Dog® reboot, launching on Amazon Prime Video and PBS KIDS next fall, has revealed an exciting slate of three more animated series based on other popular children’s books in Scholastic’s library. The trio of new shows now in development include Eva The Owlet (working title), based on the best-selling Owl Diaries series by author Rebecca Elliott; Blizz Richards: Legendary Creatures Protection League, inspired by the three-book graphic novel by writer Kevin Sherry; and Mama Lion by award-winning author/illustrator Jon J. Muth.
“We are excited to expand our slate with three more animated series based on these standout books for kids,” said Caitlin Friedman, co-executive producer and VP & General Manager of Scholastic Entertainment. “While we ready Clifford for his BIG return, we also look forward to introducing these new classics to kids and families around the world.”
Now in development from Scholastic Entertainment are:
- Eva the Owlet – Based on the USA Today best-selling Owl Diaries books, now with 3 million copies in print and 8 foreign language translations (Chinese, Farsi, German, Hungarian, Romanian, Slovak, Turkish, and Vietnamese), Eva the Owlet is the first-ever 3D CGI animated series for preschoolers geared toward young “makers” raised on DIY reality shows and YouTube videos. Featuring a school readiness curriculum, the series takes preschoolers through a day-in-the-life of Eva Wingdale, a wildly creative little owl who loves watching DIY cooking and crafting shows with her family. She also hosts her own DIY videos, teaching viewers how they can make their own homemade crafts, too. Scholastic has adapted the series for CGI animation with help from Brown Bag Films, featuring a pilot script by four-time Emmy winner Ed Valentine (Sesame Street, Fairly Odd Parents, Doc McStuffins.) Each story will include a simple craft project with Eva talking directly to the audience.
- Blizz Richards: Legendary Creatures Protection League – Inspired by Kevin Sherry’s book series, The Yeti Files, this animated, half-hour comedy series for kids 7-11 invites viewers into the super-secret and always hilarious adventures of The Legendary Creatures Protection League (LCPL). Starring Blizz Richards, the affable (yet socially-awkward) Yeti; Alexander, the anxious and persnickety elf; and Gunthar, the gremlin to disgust all gremlins, each episode showcases this rag-tag team’s comedic pursuits to protect mythical creatures from discovery by humans. It’s Men in Black meets Adventure Time, where the laughs, cliffhangers, and globe-trotting escapades are larger than life.
- Mama Lion – Award-winning author/illustrator Jon J. Muth’s book, Mama Lion Wins the Race, will come to animated life in an endearing 2D/3D hybrid series for the preschool set. Featuring a prosocial curriculum, Mama Lion will be framed by the play of twins Allie and Evan as they imagine a world around their beloved stuffed animals, Mama Lion and Tigey. These imagination-fueled adventures will manifest in gorgeous 2D painterly backgrounds, where Mama Lion and Tigey race through European-style villages in sleek CGI vehicles. Viewers will come back again and again to experience the quiet wisdom of Muth’s work, deftly folded into exciting and colorful stories.
